Dyed Silk Ribbons, Faux Writing & Etsy
I learned how to do "faux writing" on fabric in Lesley Riley's class in the 3 day retreat I attended recently. I was able to do this technique on a silk scarf that I was enamored with. I decided to try writing on some silk ribbons until I find time to do some more scarves. I was pleased with the effort so I'll share some photos with you.
I have a cork top table where I tacked the ribbon down to write on but found it was still better to adhere it to freezer paper first. I am actually writing words but I go so fast that it becomes illegible. It reminds me of old time writing with pen and ink, complete with splatters and bloops. I dialogue in my head as I go along so that when some words are actually legible they are real words. I think of sayings or song lyrics so the writing seems poetic.
I spent all day packaging, photoing, and listing some more dyed ribbons, just a few of them with the writing. I can't believe how long it takes to do all this! Please visit my Etsy shop and also leave a comment on what you think of these ribbons. I do appreciate knowing your thoughts.
This is a practice piece of habotai silk I dye painted and is a sample of what the scarves might look like.
Where do my sister's talents end? Perhaps they don't. These ribbons are very cool!
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful, Lorri! Thanks for visiting my blog and reading about my Artful Journey experience. It was a wonderful retreat, wasn't it!? I met Dorothy (Wood if I remember correctly) at one of the first meals and we dined together the rest of the retreat. Saturday night, she showed Davi, Ann and I what was going on in your class! Lots of really cool stuff. I'd love to take a class with Lesley sometime.
ReplyDeleteI love the ribbons, Lorri! It's amazing how you can do that without writing actual words sometimes. I enjoyed reading your and Nina's blog posts about the retreat - beautiful photos and very inspiring. Some day...
ReplyDeleteI think they are absolutely awesome and beautiful and I haven't seen anything like that. I will certainly keep you in mind for purchase in the future.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the ribbons with writing...very cool.
ReplyDeleteI love the ribbons and intend to buy some when I get home (don't like to make purchases with a hotel connection).
ReplyDeleteLove the "faux writing" ribbons Lorri...they are beautiful! I enjoyed the photos you posted very much also. Sorry I had to miss AJ, it sounds like it was an excellent experience. See you in PDX in October.
ReplyDeleteLorri, Your ribbon with the writing on it is beautiful and even better in person. I was so pleased when I opened my package in the mail. You need to make scarfs they would be wonderful. Lorrie
